Preventive Dentistry

You don’t start building a house by hanging pictures on a wall! You need a good foundation to build on, right? It’s the same with your smile. Whether your goal is good family dental care or a complete esthetic smile makeover, we start exactly the same way, with comprehensive exams, hygiene, and preventive strategies.

Comprehensive Exams

At your first visit, and periodically thereafter, we perform a comprehensive exam where we take a complete set of digital and panoramic images of your entire mouth. Dr. Briscoe will evaluate your teeth for decay and examine the condition of current restorations. Your bite, occlusion, TMJ and gum tissue will also be evaluated. Every treatment room is computerized and fitted with monitors mounted above the dental chairs. We use a hand-held camera and you’ll be able to see exactly what we see, at the same time.

Oral Cancer Screening

We carefully examine your mouth for any signs of oral cancer. It’s important to have regular checkups and screenings to catch oral cancer in its earliest stages.

Digital X-rays

Digital imagery gives us X-rays in more detail than was possible with traditional, film-based X-rays. And it’s environmentally friendly as well since we no longer have to dispose of the films.

Hygiene/Cleaning

Our hygienists are trained to maintain your oral health with ultrasonic scalers, such as the Cavitron. The Cavitron scaler allows our hygienists to remove the plaque and calculus more efficiently than hand scaling alone. Another tool the hygienists use is a Prophy Jet. The Prophy Jet also removes plaque and stain quicker than the polishing techniques of old. The hygienist will perform and Oral Cancer screening, evaluate the health of your gum tissue, take necessary x-rays, and perform a periodontal screening.

Periodontal Treatment

If we find any evidence of periodontal (gum) disease, such as inflammation, tenderness, or bleeding, we will first remove any plaque and calculus (hardened plaque) that cause the inflammation that leads to gum disease. We do this through root planning, using the Cavitron scalers. They use ultrasonic waves to remove calculus above and below the gum line.

We can also apply a topical antibiotic to help treat periodontal disease.

Are you a High Decay Risk? We can help to minimize that.

Dr. Briscoe & team work to identify your risk for decay (cavities). With that information, Dr. Briscoe can recommend preventive and treatment strategies to help prevent cavities from forming or recurring. It’s based on your personal risk factors, such as smoking, diet, medications, etc. Preventive strategies can include a change in diet, pit & fissure sealants, fluoride treatment or antibacterial rinses.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is one of the most important discoveries in medicine for its ability to help prevent cavities. We apply a fluoride varnish to children at every visit, and to adults as needed, based on their individual risk for caries.

Mouthguards

Mouthguards are plastic appliances that protect your teeth in a variety of circumstances. They may help prevent snoring, or protect the teeth while playing sports.
